the protester

In 1989, Francis Fukuyama declared that mankind had arrived at the "end point of...ideological evolution" in globally triumphant "Wetern lieralism"...

...in 2011, Time magazine elected "The Protester" as the Person of the Year.
I must admit I was skeptic about this decision, but the truth of the matter is that this about so much more than the Wall Street occupation by some brats and not-busy-enough actors. This is about some really brave people who, as we did decades ago, got tired of living in tyranny and were brave enough to go out on the street and face their tyrants head-on.

Regardless of the outcome in the middle or long term, this movement is admirable in the way it spread in an unprecedented way and with unprecedented consequences. The mobilization of people and the spread throughout countries was outstanding and it grew in a way that rendered powerless some of the biggest dictators in history.

More than an "Arab Spring", this is in fact one of the most important Global issues of 2011. Even in the last week of the year, there are glimpses that Russia may be following this movement, too.
